Fun Things to Do in Gwangalli, Busan: A Look at Korea’s Claw Machine Arcades
If you’re visiting Gwangalli Beach in Busan, there’s more to do than simply enjoying the ocean view and taking photos of Gwangan Bridge.
Along the streets near the beach, you’ll find plenty of cafés, restaurants, shops, and even claw machine arcades filled with cute character plushies.
They’re an easy and inexpensive way to add a little fun to your Gwangalli itinerary, especially if you enjoy character goods or want to experience a small part of Korean arcade culture.
Claw Machine Arcades Along Gwangalli Beach
One thing I noticed while walking around Gwangalli was how many claw machine shops there were.
Rather than being concentrated in just one location, several shops are scattered along the streets near Gwangalli Beach, so you can easily come across one while exploring the area.
I wouldn’t necessarily recommend making a special trip just for one particular arcade. Instead, it’s more fun to simply stop by when you see one that catches your eye.
For international visitors, it can also be an interesting way to see some of the characters and collectibles that are popular in Korea.
Sanrio, Chiikawa, Crayon Shin-chan and More
The character selection was probably the most fun part for me.
Inside the claw machine arcades, I found popular characters such as Sanrio, Chiikawa, and Crayon Shin-chan, along with plenty of other cute designs.
If you like character merchandise, it’s worth taking a few minutes to look around even if you don’t plan on playing.
There were plushies in all kinds of sizes, from small and easy-to-carry ones to surprisingly large, oversized plushies.
Some of the designs were familiar, while others were characters I hadn’t seen before, which made browsing the machines part of the experience too.
How Much Does a Claw Machine Cost in Korea?
One nice thing about Korean claw machines is that you can usually give them a try without spending much money.
For smaller plushies, a single play is generally around 500 to 1,000 KRW, although the price varies depending on the machine and the size of the prize.
That makes it pretty easy to say, “Let’s just try once.”
Of course, getting the plushie out is another story. You might win on your first try, or you might end up spending a little more than expected trying to grab the one you really want.
Even if you don’t win anything, it can still be a fun little activity to do with a friend or partner while exploring Gwangalli.
Some Arcades Have More Than Claw Machines
The larger arcades around Gwangalli can offer more than just claw machines.
Some locations also have gachapon machines, arcade games, and other small entertainment areas, making them feel more like compact game centers.
This can be especially nice if you’re traveling with friends, as a couple, or with children.
It’s also a convenient option when you want to take a short break from walking around the beach, especially during the warmer months.
A Fun Addition to a Gwangalli Beach Itinerary
If you're looking for things to do in Gwangalli, you don't necessarily need to plan every minute of your visit.
One of the best things about the neighborhood is that you can simply walk around and discover places along the way.
A simple itinerary could be:
Gwangalli Beach → walk along the waterfront → café or restaurant → claw machine arcade
After enjoying the beach and the view of Gwangan Bridge, you can wander through the nearby streets and stop at an arcade whenever you find one that looks interesting.
For travelers who enjoy cute characters, this can be particularly fun. You might come across Sanrio or Chiikawa plushies that you recognize, or discover a Korean character you haven't seen before.
A Small but Fun Korean Travel Experience
Claw machine arcades might not be a major tourist attraction, but that's actually what makes them interesting.
They're part of everyday entertainment culture in Korea, and trying a claw machine gives you a chance to experience something a little different from the usual sightseeing spots.
You don't need to spend much time or money, either.
Just pick a machine, choose a cute plushie, and see if you can grab it.
And if you fail?
At least you can laugh about it and move on to the next one.
For that reason, I think Gwangalli claw machines are a fun little activity to add to your Busan trip, especially if you're already planning to visit Gwangalli Beach.
So next time you're walking along Gwangalli Beach, keep an eye out for the colorful arcade signs.
You might find the perfect little souvenir—or at least have a fun few minutes trying to win one.
